Kyung Hyun Kim is Professor of Biotechnology and Bioinformatics, Korea University. He obtained his B.A. from Seoul National University in 1982 and his Ph.D. (Biophysics) from Iowa State University in 1990.

After postdoctoral career at Purdue university, he has served on Korea University faculty since 1995.

Professor Kim is at the Department of Biotechnology & Bioinformatics at Korea University Sejong Campus. He is a leader of BK21Plus team at the department for infectious disease control research. Visit our page for directions and other relevant information.

Prof. Kim works on protein-protein interactions between virus protein and host cell proteins and focuses on antiviral drug and universal vaccine discovery for influenza and noroviruses.

The objective of our current research is to determine protein-protein complex structures of viral proteins or involved in virus-host interactions, including influenza hemagglutinin (HA)-human innate protein complex and norovirus RNA-dependent RNA polymerase (RdRp)-VPg-RNA ternary complex.

The crystal structure of pandemic HA revealed two monomers in the asymmetric unit, which formed unusual head-to-head and tail-to-tail dimers, creating stacked hexagram structures. Currently, we focuses on developing multi-antigen approaches based on molecular scaffolds.

The crystal structures of recombinant RNA-dependent RNA polymerase (RdRp) from murine norovirus (MNV) and its complex with 5-fluorouracil, 2-thiouridine, or ribavirin were determined at 2.2-2.5 Å resolutions. Our experimental studies on the structure and function of MNV RdRp may advance the understanding about assembly and designing of some novel therapeutics against this pathogen.
