AI Convergence Education Specialization Leveraging Joint Campus Occupancy as Strategic Innovation Catalyst

 

Professor Yang Jiwoon of the Department of Electronics and Information Engineering has been appointed as the 20th Vice President of Korea University Sejong Campus. His term will run from September 1, 2025, through August 31, 2027, spanning two years.

 

The newly appointed Vice President graduated from Korea University's Department of Electrical Engineering in 1991, earned his master's degree in electrical engineering in 1995, and completed his Ph.D. in Electrical & Computer Engineering at the University of Florida, Gainesville, in 2004.

 

Since joining Korea University as a professor in the Department of Electronics and Information Engineering in 2008, Yang has served in various key positions, including Program Director at the Korea Evaluation Institute of Industrial Technology under the Ministry of Trade, Industry and Energy, Head of department at Korea University, and Dean of the College of Science and Technology at Korea University. He currently oversees Human Resource Development Center for High-tech Semiconductor Equipment.

 

The SEMO (Student Engaged MOdular) class, designed by Yang, is an innovative hybrid education model that maximizes students’ self-directed learning and creativity, and has produced meaningful educational outcomes since its introduction. Additionally, Yang has operated graduate programs for SK Hynix employees, precisely reflecting industry demands in the curriculum, and secured major government funding through the Semiconductor Specialized University Support Program (independent type), thereby expanding the foundation for cultivating semiconductor-specialized professionals.

 

Yang stated, "We plan to accelerate AI convergence education specialization to cultivate human resources needed for the artificial intelligence-based hyper-intelligent society. Through occupancy of the joint campus located in Sejong Techno Valley, we will maximize synergies with Sejong City, the future strategic capital, and use this as a catalyst for strategic innovation to establish a virtuous cycle of education, research, and industry-academia collaboration."
