Exemplary Case of Expanding University Students' Utilization Potential of Intellectual Property Information Based on KIPRIS's Public Nature and Accessibility
On September 11, student team, led by Seo Jiwon with members Lee Haeseo, Lee Geonmyeong, and Lee Junseo from the Department of Standards and Intelligence at Korea University Sejong Campus, won the Excellence Award at the Korea Intellectual Property Rights Information Service (KIPRIS) Utilization Competition hosted by the Korean Intellectual Property Office.
This competition was organized to present the utilization of intellectual property information by encouraging the discovery of creative ideas through the free patent information search service KIPRIS and by demonstrating its potential in prior art searches and technology trend analyses.
The student team conducted prior art research based on KIPRIS and presented innovative ideas for patent information utilization along with case studies analyzing patents related to automotive digital keys, receiving high evaluation from the judging panel. As a result, they received the Excellence Award—given to only two teams—along with prize money of 1 million won.
This achievement aligns with the objectives of the RISE (Regional Innovation System & Education) project promoted by Korea University Sejong Campus. The students' ability to connect intellectual property information with practical industrial applications corresponds with the RISE project's direction of fostering regional innovation specialists and strengthening industry-academia collaboration.
A Korean Intellectual Property Office official stated, "This award-winning work is an exemplary case that expanded university students' utilization potential of intellectual property information based on KIPRIS's public nature and accessibility. It will have a positive impact on intellectual property information utilization not only in universities but also in industry in the future."
Professor Kim Seunghwan of Research and Business Foundation stated, "It is very encouraging that students experienced the importance of intellectual property through practical experience close to corporate R&D work and demonstrated creative problem-solving abilities. We will continue to strengthen students' capabilities through various intellectual property utilization connections."
This award was planned as an initiative by the Technology Business Team of Sejong Research and Business Foundation, proposed by Professor Kim Jaeyoung of the Department of Standards and Intelligence, to elevate Korea University students' interest and capabilities in the intellectual property field. It is evaluated as a case that demonstrates the systematic educational system for intellectual property-related education provided by the Department of Standards and Intelligence.
