On December 5, Korea University Sejong Campus announced that its "Sustainable Learning and Sharing Project," which combines the academic achievements of the innovative SEMO Class curriculum with youth environmental mentoring activities, has been certified as a 2025 UNESCO Education for Sustainable Development (ESD) Official Project.
The UNESCO ESD Official Project Certification is a system operated by the Korean National Commission for UNESCO to identify and promote exemplary cases of education for sustainable development in Korea, while developing and internationally accrediting Korean-style ESD models. In this year's competition, 57 projects from local governments, universities, and corporations were submitted, with 23 projects receiving final certification.
The Korea University Sejong Campus Academic Information Center has operated the "Talking About Earth for Everyone" youth environmental mentoring project in Sejong City since 2019. The program established an educational foundation in the field of sustainable development education, having been certified as a UNESCO ESD Official Project in 2020.
Building upon this foundation, the Teaching and Learning Support Center developed the project-based innovative curriculum "SEMO Class Learning and Sharing Type" in 2023 to explore regional issues and share learning experiences. The center constructed an educational model that realizes the value of learning for the community within the curriculum and extends it into sustainable practices through collaboration with the Academic Information Center.
Through this UNESCO ESD certification, the educational effectiveness and value of Korea University Sejong Campus's specialized educational programs have been officially recognized by an international professional organization. In particular, the "Sustainable Learning and Sharing Project" has expanded into community-based sustainable educational activities by establishing a practice-oriented environmental mentoring system in which university student mentors and youth mentees participate together, based on learning experiences from the innovative SEMO Class Learning and Sharing Type curriculum and ESD practice experience.
Korea University Sejong Campus plans to steadily expand the innovative "SEMO Class Learning and Sharing Type" curriculum, which guides students through educational experiences in discovering and solving regional community problems, while emphasizing the importance of learning for sustainable communities and contributing to regional development. The university also plans to reliably expand the Sustainable Learning and Sharing Project to extend understanding and practice regarding sustainable environments.
