Sejong RISE Project Accelerates the Development of a Regional Sports and Culture Convergence Platform

 

On September 15, the Sejong Research and Business Cooperation Foundation of Korea University Sejong Campus, signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) at the Research and Business Cooperation Building with Major Sports Industry Co., Ltd.

This agreement forms part of the RISE (Regional Innovation System & Education) initiative jointly promoted by the Ministry of Education and Sejong City, and is expected to contribute to Sejong’s development into a self sustaining innovation city where future strategic industries and everyday culture coexist.

 

The partnership with Major Sports Industry Co., Ltd. was established to plan and operate community oriented programs that integrate sports, commerce, culture, and business, while creating a participatory platform open to residents of all ages, including people with disabilities.

 

A key objective of the agreement is to identify projects that residents can tangibly experience by repurposing campus facilities and underutilized urban spaces in Sejong. Through this approach, the two parties aim to expand integrated business models that encompass sports experiences, commercial activities, and cultural content.

 

Under the agreement, the two organizations plan to pursue initiatives including: linking sports infrastructure with local commercial districts in Sejong; planning and operating participatory programs for youth and residents; developing multifunctional spaces that combine sports, culture, and business; and strengthening the local economy and community foundations.

 

Director Choi Duho stated, “This agreement marks the first step of the Sejong RISE Project and has drawn significant interest from Sejong City and related institutions. By actively leveraging Korea University’s Fourth Industrial Revolution capabilities, particularly its artificial intelligence (AI) infrastructure, we will further develop this initiative into a project that connects regional sports infrastructure with economic revitalization.”

 

CEO Park Donggyu stated, “Since beginning operations of the outdoor ice skating rink at Seoul Plaza in 2015, we have continuously developed and disseminated programs aimed at revitalizing the regional sports industry and local economies. 

 

Through this agreement, we plan to actively utilize the IT and AI infrastructure of Korea University Sejong Campus to build an integrated sports infrastructure platform for Sejong City and to proceed various initiatives such as community oriented programs, youth and resident participatory content, the Sejong Sports Festival, and a Youth Sports Academy.”

 

The signing ceremony was attended by numerous officials, including Director Choi Duho of the Sejong Research and Business Cooperation Foundation; special appointed professors Kim Deokbong, Lee Chunhee, and Shin Sungtae; Team Leader Lee Changho of the Sejong Research and Business Cooperation Foundation; CEO Park Dong gyu and staff of Major Sports Industry Co., Ltd.; and Head Coach Do Hyunmin of the Daejeon Eagles Ice Hockey Club, reflecting strong interest from across sectors.
