On October 24, Korea University Sejong Campus was selected for the consortium type ‘Glocal Lab Project’ implemented by the Ministry of Education and the National Research Foundation of Korea, and together with Kookmin University (lead institution), Korea University Sejong Campus (participating institution), and Kangwon National University (participating institution), officially opened the Glocal Lab Defense Technology Protection Research Institute.
This project aims to conduct research on weapons system protection, advanced defense protection, and K-RMF, foster the next generation of scholars, and create an industrial ecosystem through the role of a hub research institute.
Korea University Sejong Campus plans to serve as a central role in advanced defense cybersecurity education and training in cooperation with the Edge Cloud Data Security Research Center, an ICT Research Center (ITRC), Sejong City, Sejong Techno Park, and university research institutes within the region.
The Glocal Lab Defense Technology Protection Research Institute will be operated in a consortium structure by Kookmin University’s Defense Cyber and Electronic Warfare Research Institute, Korea University Sejong Campus Natural Sciences Research Institute, and Kangwon National University Advanced Military Science and Technology Research Institute, with a total budget of 21.6 billion won over the next nine years.
Of this amount, the budget exclusively allocated to Korea University Sejong Campus is 6.4 billion won. The institute aims to integrate cybersecurity and defense technologies, conduct AI-based threat detection, research next-generation cryptographic technologies, cultivate professional manpower, and build an open research ecosystem, while Korea University Sejong Campus will take a leading role in core tasks in the fields of AI and cybersecurity.

As part of this project, Korea University Sejong Campus and the Air Force Academy signed a memorandum of understanding (MOU) on the 27th for research and educational cooperation in the field of defense technology protection.
Through this agreement, the two institutions plan to establish and strengthen a practical cooperation framework, including joint research on policy and technology development, defense technology protection education, exchange of professional personnel, joint planning of research projects, hosting academic conferences, and operation of educational programs. Based on this, the institute is expected to establish itself as a comprehensive regional cooperation hub encompassing universities, the military, industry, and research institutions.
Through this achievement, Korea University Sejong Campus is expected to establish itself as a key hub of the defense security ecosystem that connects universities, the military, industry, and research institutions, going beyond its role as a simple participating research institution.
In addition, the Korea University Sejong Research and Business Cooperation Foundation plans to expand its scope of activities across regional future strategic industries in cooperation with the Edge Cloud Data Security Research Center, which is operated with support from the Ministry of Science and ICT and the Institute of Information & Communications Technology Planning & Evaluation (IITP) under the University ICT Research Center (ITRC) program, and to contribute to enhancing regional and national innovation competitiveness by building an integrated platform involving local government, industry, academia, research institutes, and public institutions.
