RISE: Seeking strategies for innovation in the Sejong region

 

On December 4, Korea University Sejong Campus held the ‘2025 Sejong Research and Business Innovation Forum’ at the Courtyard by Marriott Sejong.

 

At the forum, marking the first year of RISE, the achievements of various education and research projects, including the Sejong RISE Project Group, were shared. Approximately 150 participants attended the event, including representatives from Sejong City, innovation institutions, local companies, executives of Korea University family companies, and faculty and staff.

 

Participants discussed strategies for the successful implementation of the RISE project and shared the view that Sejong City, Korea University, and companies should work together to drive regional innovation.

 

Yang Jiwoon, Vice President of the Sejong Campus and organizer of the forum, stated, “We are now standing at a major turning point where artificial intelligence technology is reshaping not only industry but society. Let us open the era of AI-centered transformation together. A regional innovation ecosystem in Sejong can be completed when universities provide future professionals and knowledge, companies and regions provide the sites of innovation, and local governments and public institutions support them through policies and systems.”

 

 

Lee Seungwon, Vice Mayor for Economic Affairs of Sejong City, stated, “The three fields led by Korea University Sejong Campus: future mobility, information protection, and quantum, are core projects that directly align with Sejong City’s future growth engines and are critical tasks that must succeed. The Handuri Campus system, in which Korea University Sejong Campus participates as a lead university, will play an important role in helping Sejong advance from a ‘city where universities gather’ to a ‘city where universities, companies, and local governments form a single education and research ecosystem.’”

 

Following this, the Sejong Credit Guarantee Foundation and the Sejong Research and Business Cooperation Foundation of Korea University signed a memorandum of understanding (MOU) and discussed cooperation measures to revitalize the startup ecosystem in the Sejong region.

 

Chairman Kim Hyomyung stated, “Through this agreement, our foundation will cooperate with the Sejong Research and Business Cooperation Foundation of Korea University to build a comprehensive support system, from the startup preparation stage to growth and recovery support, beyond financial assistance, and to provide services that can offer practical help to entrepreneurs in the Sejong region.”

 

The Sejong Techno Park, Sejong Center for Creative Economy and Innovation, and the Sejong Chamber of Commerce and Industry introduced their 2026 corporate support programs and presented strategies for technology development, startup support, market expansion, and export support. Korea University Holdings Company and the Sejong RISE Project Group also introduced education and research and business cooperation programs, strengthening communication with companies.

 

Finally, during the ‘Time for Collaboration among Family Companies’ session, strategies to promote the participation of Korea University family companies in the RISE project were discussed.

 

The Future City Management Research Institute, the Korea EMS Association, and Dinkpet Security presented collaboration proposals, and participants agreed to concretize cooperation systems through in-depth discussions.

 

Kim Deokbong, Specially Appointed Professor who moderated the meeting, stated, “We will institutionalize collaboration meetings between Korea University family companies and Sejong regional companies, and build a system linked to the RISE project to contribute to regional innovation.”
