Full-scale support for long-term settlement of outstanding international graduate students

Establishing a turning point for research capacity and internationalization strategies

 

Korea University Sejong Campus has been finally selected as a participating university in the ‘K-STAR Visa Track,’ a national core human resource policy newly introduced by the Ministry of Justice. 

 

This selection is significant in that it provides an institutional foundation to support long-term stay and settlement for outstanding international students enrolled in science and engineering master’s and doctoral programs.

 

The ‘K-STAR Visa Track’ is an expanded and reorganized system of the former ‘Fast Track for Permanent Residency and Naturalization of Outstanding Science and Technology Talented Individual,’ which had previously been limited to five science and technology specialized universities.

 

The program has now been extended to include general universities, such as those accredited for international education capacity and BK21 Graduate School Innovation Support universities. With this selection, a total of 32 universities are participating in the program.

 

On December 5, at the designation plaque presentation ceremony for selected universities of the ‘K-STAR Visa Track,’ held at the Gwacheon Government Complex, the Minister of Justice and representatives from all 32 selected universities attended. Korea University Sejong Campus was represented by Choi Boseung, Director of Academic Affairs.

 

Through this policy, outstanding international graduates of science and engineering master’s and doctoral programs who are recommended by the president of a participating university may directly apply for resident (F-2) status without additional employment requirements.

 

Based on subsequent research achievements, they may then apply for permanent resident (F-5) status after three years. In addition, individuals with exceptional research performance may be eligible for a pathway to special naturalization through this step-by-step benefit system.

 

Following the plaque presentation ceremony, the Ministry of Justice held a meeting to explain the purpose of the system and future policy directions, and to exchange opinions with universities regarding the recruitment and management of international students.

 

With this selection, Korea University Sejong Campus plans to establish a recommendation system for outstanding international graduate students, reorganize long-term stay and living support systems, and actively prepare the foundation for operating the visa track, including the expansion of research opportunities. 

 

Furthermore, by strengthening support and management systems for international students, the campus is expected to reach an important turning point in systematically advancing its research capacity and internationalization strategy.
