Professor Choi Jongtaek of the Division of Cultural Heritage Convergence has been inaugurated as the 31st President of the Korean Archaeological Society.

 

The Korean Archaeological Society is an academic organization representing the field of archaeology in the Republic of Korea and marks its 50th anniversary in 2026.

 

In this context, Professor Choi’s inauguration is significant in that it comes at a time when the society must carry forward the achievements accumulated over the past half century while seeking directions for future development.

 

Professor Choi Jongtaek has been active as a member of the Korean Archaeological Society for more than 40 years since 1984. In his inaugural address, he presented directions for the sustainable development of archaeology amid rapidly changing social environments and transformations across the humanities.

 

He identified the reestablishment of the society’s identity and the concretization of its future vision as key tasks and stated that he would promote the incorporation of the society as a legal entity and the establishment of a permanent secretariat to build a stable operational system, as well as the creation of online and offline platforms to strengthen communication among members.

 

He also presented plans to expand research domains by actively utilizing advanced research tools such as big data, artificial intelligence, and 3D reconstruction technologies in response to the digital and AI-driven environment.

 

In addition, through cooperation with related institutions, including the National Heritage Administration, he aims to enhance the academic rigor of buried cultural heritage excavation investigations and to normalize university field-based practical training programs that have been weakened.

 

Furthermore, he mentioned plans for balanced development across subfields and the expansion of inter-Korean academic exchange. He proposed strengthening support for prehistoric archaeology, a field with a relatively weakened research base, and, in the long term, promoting comparative research on archaeological materials from South and North Korea to lay the groundwork for future joint research.
