Professor Jo Minho of the Department of Computer Software at Korea University Sejong Campus was selected among the world’s top 2% scientists in 2025, following his selection in 2024, marking his second consecutive year on the list.
The selection of the world’s top 2% scientists is an index jointly announced annually since 2019 by Stanford University in the United States and Elsevier, the publisher that manages the global academic citation database Scopus
The purpose of this index is to compare and evaluate the academic influence of researchers worldwide using fair and standardized citation-based metrics.
Elsevier emphasizes that this index is not an award granted to individual researchers nor a simple ranking competition, but rather a global benchmark that objectively demonstrates research impact by field. Accordingly, by disclosing citation data of published papers, the index serves as a reference indicator for assessing the relative academic influence of researchers.
As of 2025, the number of top 2% researchers from Korea reached 2,633, an increase of 269 researchers (11.4%) compared to 2,364 in 2024, placing Korea 15th worldwide. While Korea ranks 13th globally in terms of the number of academic publications, it ranks 15th in terms of the number of top 2% researchers, indicating that the proportion of top-tier researchers is relatively lower compared to its publication output.
Relatedly, Professor Jo Minho is a globally recognized scholar in the fields of artificial intelligence (AI) and the Internet of Things (IoT).
In November, he was appointed as a Visiting Distinguished Chair Professor at Guizhou University in China in recognition of his outstanding research achievements in AI. Guizhou University is a research-oriented institution specializing in big data and artificial intelligence and hosts the largest national big data computing center designated by the Chinese government.
