A smart city is a sustainable city that provides a variety of progressive city services and can independently solve problems based on urban infrastructure that is built by converging or combining information and communication technology with high-tech elements in urban planning and design.

A smart city is a platform for the national future industry that can create new industries by improving the city's competitiveness and its citizens' quality of life by utilizing innovative technologies from the 4th industrial revolution, while also enhancing the city's sustainability.

Smart cities are one of the four policy directions and eight core leading projects according to the current government’s innovation and electricity investment plan. This is an area that is in desperate need of active human resources to solve various issues including convergence services, urban planning, infrastructure, safety, energy, environment, and governance. It is necessary to train people to meet the demands of the future industry by providing smart city education programs that consider domestic and overseas smart city policies and demands, breaking away from the existing limited and superficial education programs.
