Introduction to Department

1. Status of Department of Mathematics

Department of Mathematics was established in 1981, the foundation year of Sejong Campus. This is one of the oldest departments of Sejong Campus. In 1985, the department produced its first graduates, totaling about 600 graduates until now. The graduates are providing great services in various social areas. Currently, at Department of Mathematics, nine professors, including three visiting professors are dedicated to providing good lectures and teaching..

The department provides an education environment equipped with advanced equipment necessary for research and education in efficient information electronic application. Independent computation practice room and workstation room are equipped with sun-workstation, audio-visual equipment, several tens of Pentium IV PCs, laser printer, scanner and beam projector. Mathematics Room as Required Subject provides servers and many Pentium IV PCs. There is also Support Center for Mathematics and Science for freshmen.

2. Introduction to Department of Mathematics

Department of Mathematics aims to develop creative mathematical professionals and advanced mathematicians equipped with information science knowledge to contribute to advanced sciences. To achieve this aim, at Department of Mathematics, in a larger sense, students will learn about numbers and functions, which is interesting and beautiful as an academic subject. The mathematical way of recognizing and understanding strict logical system and object of mathematics pertains to a language of all sciences, applicable to all areas of natural sciences, engineering, the humanities and social sciences. Especially, the perfection of mathematics in academic logical system is a model of all sciences and recently, papers of the humanities and social sciences often use mathematical methodologies. This is a phenomenon that “all sciences look after mathematics.” That Gauss said that “Mathematics is the Queen of Sciences" can be understood in this sense.

Mathematics is divided largely into two areas: Pure mathematics cover algebra studying computational structure of numbers and sets, analytics studying characteristics of functions, geometry and topology studying spatial structure. Also, there is applied mathematics covering finance mathematics, insurance mathematics, semiotics and IT-related mathematics. Students will be experts in mathematics when they have fully learned these areas.

3. Career Path

The most professional occupation for mathematical professionals is to teach at Department of Mathematics. The typical route to become a university professor is to study mathematics in the undergraduate course before entering domestic or overseas graduates schools to secure doctoral degrees. Actually, many graduates of Department of Mathematics are working as professors now.

Also, mathematical professionals can be teachers. Department of Mathematics provides a teaching course for attendants to secure Regular Teacher License Grade 2 from the Ministry of Education and work at middle or high schools. Especially, if a student passes the national teacher recruitment examination, he/she can work as a teacher at public middle or high schools. Currently, many graduates from Department of Mathematics are working for public or private middle or high schools. Otherwise, they may engage in publication related to mathematics or college entrance examination such as private teaching institutions.

Mathematicians who focused more on applied mathematics can have diverse career paths.

Those who studied applied mathematics are active in finance, insurance, corporate research and computer areas based on their numerical ways of thinking. Especially, Department of Mathematics manages an interdisciplinary program named derivative financial engineering in affiliation with Department of Business Administration and Department of Statistics. This provides a very useful condition for students to enter into finance career by studying mathematics as their first major and then, derivative financial engineering. Additionally, there are many cases where people of mathematics display excellent capacity in areas not directly related to Department of Mathematics. The two major axes of mathematical ways of thinking is logical processing and freedom of thoughts. Hence, such comprehensive analytic skills and unobstructed ways of thinking help greatly to work in the areas completely unrelated with Department of Mathematics. Anyone studying mathematics can develop mathematic ways of thinking, resulting in problem-solving skills to wisely overcome any crisis. Recently, companies of various areas based in advanced countries prioritize those who have majored in mathematics based on this realization. In Korea, too, as informatization deepens, better mathematical skills including processing of a large amount of data are required, making the standing of people of mathematics more important in the future.

Korea University provides a very useful condition where students can benefit from an in-depth program or major in two or more areas. This is because credit requirement is only 36, which is also required. Therefore, if a student chooses Mathematics as the first major, he/she can have more options to select the second major as mathematics is a linguistic subject as described above, enabling the student to major in the second area and enter into various social areas.

Tips on Department

The 21st century is characterized as informatization society. In such a society, information is the most important asset. Mathematics has supported development by providing theoretical backgrounds and solutions of sciences and engineering over the last two centuries, which is in line with its nickname, Mother of Sciences. Now in line with the progress into informatization society, Department of Mathematics, College of Natural Sciences is to be renamed as informatics (information+mathematics=informatics) after its 20 years of history. The aim is to help the students to take the curricula covering financial information, computer and communication which are the core to development and stability of informatization society and become really needed professionals.

  1. 01 What aptitudes are appropriate to enter the department?
    Although Mathematics is rather unpopular in Korea, President of the International Mathematical Union (IMU) stressed the importance of mathematics in 2000 on his visit to Korea to celebrate the year of mathematics. What it differs from traditional forms of Department of Mathematics is the focus on applied mathematics using computers, especially financial information and codes. The scope of application is very wide and anyone without revulsion against mathematics can choose to study.
  2. 02What are the characteristics of this department?
    Department of Mathematics has developed in a way to fit the informatization society and actively plays the roles needed in the society. Especially, the department covers financial informatics related to development derivative financial instrument software and cryptographic mathematics aimed at prevention of counter-effects of informatization society for the first time in Korea.
  3. 03What will we study in this department?
    Fiancial informatics and cryptographic mathematics have recently been in rapid development through computer application available based on the traditional mathematics such as probability theory, number theory, analytics and topography. Hence, the department handles traditional mathematics as the basics, related applied mathematics, computer simulation and modeling, semiotic design and interpretation and other application techniques.
  4. 04Are their extracurricular activities?
    Cryptopia is a group of students interested in cryptography. It won the first rank among the 30 such groups of the nation in the competition (Ministry of Information and Communication, 2000), securing support every year. The department is fully equipped with independent computer practice rooms and related software, enabling students practice in the areas of cryptography, finance informatics, other computer and communication techniques. Also, the group of students that is of more traditional mathematics has developed for a long time.
  5. 05What are the career paths after graduation?
    Anyone interested or having experienced in finance mathematics may enter financial institutions and many graduates have consistently joined insurance or securities companies so far. Students who have studied cryptography entered the National Intelligence Service, Electronics and Telecommunications Research Institute (ETRI) and other related institutions. Otherwise, graduates may join Graduate School of Information Security established for the first time mostly by professors from this department. Also, attending the course along with teaching course, students may become teachers.
