Introduction to Department

Department of Chemistry of College of Natural Sciences is one of the basic departments of the university established with an aim "to teach and learn the in-depth academic theories and methods of wider applications necessary to develop the country and the human society" as prescribed in Article 108 of the Act on Education and Article 1 of Korea University Regulations. Therefore, Department of Chemistry provides education of basic theories and major contents of Chemistry to realize the educational goal to develop human resources to contribute to the industrial society. It will contribute to academic development and support basic education for applied sciences, developing the state and the human society.

Department of Chemistry is dedicated to fulfilling the departmental goals in a balanced way in alliance with supportive education for natural sciences as well as development of professionals. The functions are fulfilled as the campus provides the opportunity for higher education in local communities.

Korea University has played a significant role in the modern history of the Republic of Korea and produced countless competent human resources as the fountain for national development. In order to realize the educational goals in an expanded sense, produce more human resources through freedom, justice and truth sought by the university and contribute to a better society in the future, Korea University has opened a new campus in the middle of the Republic of Korea.

It is improving the department's quality and width by cultivating chemists to lead the 21st century, maintaining affiliations with Anam Campus for academic affairs and research and establishing close industrial-academic cooperation with national, public and private research agencies within the near Daedeok Science Complex. Also, Department of Chemistry enables students to acquire more in-depth chemical knowledge through experiment and practice. Especially, students can graduate only when they secure 500 TOFEL scores and 600 TOEIC scores or higher. Also, they need to present successful papers to graduate by conducting a test.

Department of Chemistry was established to meet the purpose and the background and is one of the oldest departments among others provided by Sejong Campus, Korea University. It is developing sincerely as a core department of Sejong Campus to progress as a core of the university.

Tips on Department

The aim is to develop advanced workforce specializing in science to lead fine chemistry related to the newest new materials such as semi-conductor, precision ceramic, liquid crystal, functional high-polymer, organic metal compounds, nano-structured material and superconductor. To achieve this aim, as for Chemistry, the theories and experiment covering materials science, physical chemistry, organic chemistry and analytical chemistry. Students will also learn the technologies related to new materials. In this way, graduates can apply what they have learned when employed by industrial sources and continue higher research at graduate schools or research agencies.

  1. 01What aptitudes are appropriate to enter the department?
    Students shall be able to think exploratorily and comprehensively and try to develop creative ideas at all times. Abstract and in-depth mathematical knowledge is not required but students will need be able and willing to analyze events and objects scientifically and plan and execute based on such analyses. At the same time, as the area requires cooperation with many other people at laboratories or on industrial sites, they need to be able to get along with other people comfortably and become leaders in the end. Hence, they need leadership to manage organizations and human resources.
  2. 02What are the characteristics of this department?
    While general theories taught at Department of Chemistry are included, chemical theories and technologies enabling application to various new materials are provided so that students can apply what they have learned on their industrial sites directly. They need to study basic subjects related to new materials so that they can acquire the knowledge from many more major subjects. Recommended is to take personality-related subjects to help students to develop explorative, creative and comprehensive aptitudes and attitudes.
  3. 03What will we study in this department?
    First of all, students will study the theories and conduct tests related to materials science, physical chemistry as the basis of chemistry, organic chemistry, inorganic chemistry and analytic chemistry to understand new materials and finally reach what they really want to study by learning diverse applied chemistry subjects. They will widen their perspectives by studying adjacent areas of physics, electronic engineering and life science and if necessary, taking subjects of the humanities and social sciences. Also, they will attend classes of mathematics, computation and statistics to develop their skills for project planning and simulation.
  4. 04Are their extracurricular activities?
    • Opportunity to attend chemistry-related symposiums and present their papers;
    • Visiting research or industrial sources related to new materials to reinforce bonds and heighten interest;
    • Exchanging opinions on the areas of common interest with other Departments of Chemistry and others related to materials and establishing the definition of Advanced Materials Chemistry; and,
    • Supported for facilitation of groups dedicated to explore interests of students.
  5. 05What are the career paths after graduation?
    First of all, graduates can take part in R&D pertaining to Advanced Materials Chemistry at national, state-funded or corporate research agencies related to chemistry. They may enter more typical chemistry sources such as petrochemicals, high-polymer chemistry, pharmaceutical and organic/inorganic chemistry and apply their chemistry knowledge. They will also expand and develop new areas in the industrial fields such as semi-conductor and liquid crystal as areas of new materials. They will engage in software affairs based on new materials and chemistry in addition to hardware.
