본 연구실은 생물이 가지고 있는 독특하고 유용한 기능성 또는 구조를 산업적으로 응용하는 생물모사 ("Biomimetics") 기반의 Biotechnology를 지향한다.
특히, 새로운 기능성을 가진 생물 분자를 발굴하거나 목적에 맞는 설계 및 개량을 통한 새로운 산업용 생물복합 재료 및 효소 개발 연구를 진행하고 있다.
설계된 기능성 생물 분자 및 복합체는 고효능의 생물 약제로의 활용 뿐만 아니라 고정밀 생명 분석용 분자 프로브와 고효율 생물전환 시스템 구성용 생촉매 등으로 활용 가능하다. 또한, 인공 기능성 분자 설계를 바탕으로 생명의 근원을 분자수준에서 이해함과 더불어 새로운 개념의 기능성 창출도 시도하고 있다.
연구분야는 나노생물공학과 생체모방공학으로 주로 생체유래 DNA, RNA, 단백질, 효소 등의 분자나노수준의 고찰과 생체 모방형 설계를 통해 새로운 산업용, 의료용 바이오 소재 개발 연구를 수행하고 있다. 주요 연구과제는 C1 (CO2 , CH4) 저감 및 전환용 생물모방 촉매 개발, 모방 설계기반의 약물전달 및 조직공학 소재 개발, 바이오미네랄 유래의 유무기복합 신소재개발, Aptamer 및 변형 핵산등 기능성 분자의약 개발 등이다.
