기존의 약학 분야는 화학, 생화학, 물리, 생리학등이 주축이 되는 학문으로 여겨져 왔습니다. 그러나 의약품은 인간에게 적용되는 것으로 국가의 보건 체계 및 문화에 큰 영향을 받게 되고, 자연과학 지식의 습득만으로는 충분한 시야를 얻을 수 없습니다. 의약품의 복잡성과 그에 대한 의존도가 높아지는 현대 사회에서는 자연과학뿐만 아니라 사회, 사회심리, 정치, 법, 역사, 경제학적 지식을 갖춘 인력이 필요하며, 사회약학은 그 목적을 위해 만들어진 학문입니다. 사회약학에서는 의약품을 사회/인문학적인 관점에서 연구하며, 관련 주제로는 의약품 사용에 관련된 사회적 요인인 약과 건강에 대한 믿음, 태도, 규칙, 행동, 관계등이 포함됩니다.
예를 들어, 사회적 측면을 연구하는 분야에서는 다음과 같은 연구가 이루어질 수 있습니다.
- 법이 약의 개발과 승인에 어떻게 영향을 미치는가?
- 새롭게 개발된 제품이 어떻게 건강과 보건재정에 영향을 미치는가?
- 약사 교육 시스템이 다른 나라들에서는 어떻게 의약품이 분배되는가?
소비자 측면을 연구하는 분야에서는 다음과 같은 연구들이 이루어질 수 있습니다.
- 환자는 왜 처방전대로 약을 복용하는가? 또는 하지 않는가?
- 환자가 이해하는데 가장 효율적인 정보를 어떻게 전달할 수 있는가?
- 약사는 어떻게 환자의 약 관련 문제 및 부작용을 효율적으로 밝혀낼 수 있는가?
- 새로운 의약품 서비스를 어떻게 적용시킬 수 있을까?
사회약학자들은 인문학과 사회과학적 이론을 토대로 위와 같은 질문들에 대해 과학적으로 기술하고 설명하여 연구원, 정책 입안자, 약사 및 다른 의료인/보건의료인, 환자에게 필요한 정보를 제공하며, 최근의 연구 경향으로는 약물경제학과 같이 의약학적 지식을 기반으로 사회적 영향을 파악하는 융합적 연구가 활발하게 진행되고 있습니다.
고려대학교 사회약학 연구실에서는 다음과 같이 사회, 역학, 보건, 경제등의 분야를 다루는 수업을 제공하며, 신약 등의 경제성 평가 및 정책 연구를 주 과제로 삼고 있습니다.
